Went blading for the first time since I moved. The streets around this neighbourhood are made for it; they have very little traffic.
Spent 1048 euro on two pairs of new glasses. My shopping basket at Amazon contains books to the value of 258 British sterling. I have yet to work up the courage to actually place the order. Can you tell I have received my Danish credit card?
The faithful among you will know that I was never drafted to the Danish defence forces because of my moving to Dublin a few months before my drafting session. Last week I notified the Danish authorities of my relocation back to Denmark and today I received my drafting notice. If I am called to do service, I will be completing my service alongside 18 and 19 year old kids. There will be war. Have a nice day.
Dropped my laptop off for repair estimates. I set a low limit as I am not going to spend too much on fixing hardware that is not covered by a warranty. I guess I will end up buying a new laptop if the repairs is more than 270 euro.
The weather changed as I headed home, and it started to rain. A walk in the
rain is not always a bad thing. Shipped miracle to the hosting
company. Any day now.
Doing even this little update without my laptop is really annoying. Windows
XP just crashed after less than an hours uptime. This update would have been
lost if it was not for vim running in a screen
session on c-tower. I hope you appreciate the pain I go through
for you.
I am running iMesh from time to time, looking for stuff you cannot get in the shops here, like certain standup comedians and snippets of lesbian sex movies. Ahem. From a functional point of view, iMesh does the job, I guess, but from a quality point of view, it is a poster child for bad software. If the iMesh client is not run with administrator priviliges, it crashes before the splash screen even appears. So it runs with admin privs. Bad. I wanted to share my iMesh experience with the developers, so I launched iMesh and clicked "Help -> Send support request". On my system, this makes my browser load http://www.imesh.com/support/ .. which does not exist on their server.
Oh, and they claim to be spyware free, because Steve Gibson says so.
Pathetic.
Oh look. I am not sore from yesterday's walk.
My heart is breaking. See the latest English addition in muppets. According to Rob, I cunningly only tell half the story to make myself look good. So now you know, and whenever you see me write anything, you have to wonder what I am not telling.
I got up at 10.30am, I am still only wearing boxershorts and I am eating cereal. I did not shower yesterday. I am listening to a Cheap Trick CD. The other day I bought some clothes that make the Spirited One drool even more over me. Remember to wonder what I am not telling you. As far as you know I could be wearing the boxershorts on my head.
I am going to visit my brother later this afternoon.
My laptop is busted. It had a two feet fall which apparently broke the DC connector on the motherboard. This means that the system can only draw power from battery, and that the batteries cannot be recharged. I did some searches on the net and this appears to be a very common failure to the 560s.
I am once again left without trustworthy hardware to work on, and all my projects are consequently on hold again. Fuck.
All of my computers are now back online. I will resume working on updates over the next few days.
Went for a walk today. I fear I might be sore tomorrow.
Our cablemodem has been turned into a bridging device, and there are no IP filters. I will need to spend some time locking down my XP machine as I never got around to doing that since the last reload.
Whoop! My shipment arrived today so I will be spending the next few days getting settled. I am never, ever moving again. If you put a gun to my head then, maybe, we can talk about it. Maybe.
Went to hang with an old friend and listened to some metal music. It seem I will need to spend some time with a band called Novembers Doom.
My laptop will be going offline again, until the MAC addressing issue has
been resolved. I could use oldasdirt as NAT gateway, but my things
have yet to arrive here. I am guessing the shipper will call me tomorrow to
arrange delivery.
I never told you, but I went out for dinner almost every night of my last two weeks in Ireland. Not surprisingly I have regained a bit of the weight I lost during January and February. Just something I should watch out for; now that the party is over all of the excess weight needs to come off.
I have been watching a bit of TV during the last few days. Crap TV at times, too. I should really know better.
INXS's greatest hits is currently playing.
Oh, look! I have a slight tan! Imagine that. My last one was before I moved to Ireland. Now that I am no longer pale blue, you may refrain from calling me Papa Smurf. Thank you. The Spirited One got a slight sunburn yesterday. Ouch. She was never pale blue like I used to be.
I got that annoying cable modem working with my laptop. Turns out that static IP users on this network may find that the MAC cache on the switch does not refresh properly so sometimes switching between two computers does not work. I can smell NAT and a gateway system coming up to solve this problem.
Bought a Denver DVD player for a hundred euro today. I am using it to play CDs. Pink Floyd is currently playing.
Dave and Tony are showing up in a little while. They get to help move crates! They should feel lucky. Tony mentioned something about expecting cold beers in my fridge.
Some of my things simply will not fit and without a cluster of supercomputers I cannot relink the world against zlib in time, so I am forced to make some decisions on what to discard.
I am shutting down my router and laptop now. You should expect silence for a day or two while I sleep. Once I have slept, I can worry about restoring IP connectivity.
Next time you talk to me, I will be back in Denmark. See my travelplan.
Packing all my shit is really a pain. My lower back is sore, almost the way I am sore when I have been out rollerblading without warming up properly first. Had to repack 3 crates due to weight, and I am having issues fitting everything into the crates I have. I need to relink the world against zlib.
Mick popped over to pick up some of the tidbits he was going to take off me. We went into the Eastern Tandori again, and had the best meal ever. The starter consisted of lamb, beef and chicken cooked to perfection. The meat was juicy and even the lamb melted on my tongue. Oh my god.
We consumed a handful of Cobra's (Lovely Indian beer; make it a point to try one if you never have) and as we poured the first one, Mick raised his glass in a toast. The dialogue went exactly like this:
Mick: Right man. Cheers. Me: Cheers. Mick: I'm going to miss you. Me: I'll miss you. Mick: Shine on you crazy diamond.
I laughed and drank a big sip of my excellent beer. After dinner (104EUR; a new Sloppy Bastards record!) we lashed his things into the car and we agreed to meet up again in a few months.
It is 4am and my body requires sleep. The outstanding items on my todo list will have to wait until tomorrow. Need to get out of bed between 8 or 9.
Today rlogin and rexec clients and servers were
removed from OpenBSD base. I am delighted to see this willingness to completely
and forcefully discard legacy applications that are prone to security risks. I
just wish they would do the same to ftp.
Two guys I know decided to give up masturbation. The site contains some background on the idea, their diary, motivational hints, etc. Go on, join their cause for penile rest. You know you want to. I am told females are allowed to join as well.
This quote spotted in a programming newsgroup made me roar:
C++: "an octopus made by nailing extra legs onto a dog"
-- Steve Taylor, 1998
Please ignore the fact that Troll is going to be written in C++. If Jerry ever gets out of hospital.
No one called or sent email so I did not go to the Porter House.
Only last week I was going to bed at 7pm and getting up around 6am. Now I sleep past noon. Pffft. My wrist has started to hurt. I really hope I am not going to suffer from that infection whatever-it-is-called thing. That would suck.
I went to see Showtime with Eddie Murphy and Robert de Niro. No way it is going to change your life, but it might make you giggle your motherfucking ass off.
I know. I am slow with the updates these days. My mind is elsewhere. I know you will find it in your heart to forgive me. Jerry will be staying in the hospital for another 8 weeks or so. His employer ought to supply him with a lifeline (e.g. GSM modem and laptop) for this duration, but I fear they do not have enough clue to do something like that.
Speaking of clueless companies, that Danish security company I contacted last week has not returned my email, and they are still doing less than optimal input validation on their site.
Oh, part 2 of my departure celebration tomorrow. I still have no idea where to go, but meet me at 7pm in Porterhouse. Help me decide then. Please call or send email if you are going to show up so I know who to expect.
Spent the briefest of time doing security review of code for the next release of ORDB.org, which might be available this weekend. If you want to help us translate ORDB to your language, please stop by. All you need is a webbrowser and language skills.
307 unique visitors to the Dominion today. 407 yesterday and 226 on the 1st. Absolute madness.
Yikes. Jerry may have to stay in hospital another 6 weeks. He will know for certain in the next day or two. Rescheduled some deadlines for Troll to sometime in the future when he is well again.
Spent more time packing. Videos and CDs take up a lot of space! I am being slow about it. Monday is a bank holiday, so realistically I will need to make the call tomorrow and arrange pickup on Tuesday. Over the weekend I can just have my router and laptop, and a bit of clothes still unpacked. Everything else goes into boxes. The duvet for my doublebed takes up a full crate. I will not have room for it.
Met with Mick and Simon for dinner. Interesting as always. Home around 9pm.
Today is my last day on my former employers payroll.
One of my anonymous benefactors donated a sexy laptop with 64 megabytes of RAM, a 6 gigabyte disk and a cardbus ethernet card. Needless to say, such a beast is priceless in my hands, and that is exactly the hostname I gave it after I installed OpenBSD 3.1 on it. Priceless.
This means I will be able to continue working on my projects and this site. If my work helps you, you may want to thank my benefactor for making this possible. Send the thank you email to me and I will relay your good vibes.
