I am unable to reproduce the sshd problem. This bothers me.
However, I did find out that OpenBSD has supported getpeereid()
since 3.0. This is a very good thing; helps in getting rid of SUID software.
Recovered from Saturday's drinking. Went out to dinner and a movie. Reviewed some code, mailed a few diffs to some people.
I skipped the gym for the past two days and paid the price today. Never again. I am sticking to my schedule from now on.
Heard a rumour that Men in Black 2 sucks donkey cock.
I think I have discovered a resource exhaustion problem in sshd. Between 2pm and 6.30pm I almost killed miracle by keeping memory (256MB of which less than 80MB is normally used) and CPU usage at full. Of course now I am having problems reproducing, but it appears to be a problem related to the privsep code. I will contact the OpenSSH crowd when I have something substantial. Something tells me they prefer code over talk.
Also, this appears in the logs when a client forcefully disconnects:
Jul 26 01:49:55 miracle sshd[20569]: Read error from remote host: Connection reset by peer
There is no other entry for pid 20569. Took me a few minutes to realise it was the pid of the sshd process (in privsep) which is not logged. It would help if the fork to privsep caused a log entry so people like me can keep track of their ssh connections.
One of the running copies of epic on miracle takes up 7MB of
memory. My copy takes up less than 3. rtin eats 10MB. Unreal.
Heh. Brian tells me that linking to him gave him 85 hits. He also claims I am on drugs. jcs has commit access; Brian does not. Martin got an extra 40 or so hits when I linked to his site. I should charge money for this.
Hello! I am still here. The Spirited One went to see her sister on Sunday and will not be back until tomorrow. As a result, I have been sleeping late and spending my days in front of the computer. mongers.org now has nifty MRTG graphs of disk usage, system load, etc (that none of you can access), which is nice.
I promised you a review of the chocolate mousse, and I have to say it was really, really nice. Another day and a half in the fridge made it even nicer.
I looked at SquirrelMail last night. It is a PHP-based webmail application and from a security point of view, it is a complete disaster. I will be publishing the results of the security audit in the near future.
I guess I will need to teach the Spirited One how to use mutt
after all.
Brian decided the pictures I posted of the Spirited One are fake. He imagined her having mostly brown, semi-curly hair. I told him we are both sorry to disappoint him. He did not appear to care much for apologies. OpenBSD developers are like that.
Oh, she is making me homemade chocolate mousse tonight. Watch this space for a "product review".
I have been working out every weekday since Monday, and she joined me on Tuesday. It left me pretty much wrecked, and outside of the time we spend working out, we are confined to the bed as a result of the intense efforts. We are completely drained. Really.
Dispite my efforts in the gym, I have gained a few pounds. I trust this gain to be muscle, not fat.
A few days ago we went to see a local copy band, The Original Local Blues Brothers at a free concert not far from here. This was before we became confined to our bed due to working out.
The vacation was really nice! You know, it is hard being on vacation. You have to get up somewhat early and rush around and see all the local sights, and generally do things. So I did not sleep at all for 4 days, and have been recovering since I got home.
I got my Amazon package today. Time to stop sleeping and start reading.

I should take a picture of my bookshelf, if nothing else, for insurance purposes.
I bought another toy today! It is a 4x4 remote controlled car. Green, of course, and lightning fast. Expect pictures and possibly a movie or two.
I am away from Wednesday to Sunday.
Got up at 10am to entertain visitors, slept at 9pm only to find myself awake at 4am.
Oh, we posted ORDB news. This could be the start of me turning into a media whore. As much as ORDB helps, not all spam is sent (directly) through open relays. The other day I received my first piece of spam to my mongers.org account. Bastards. I installed SpamAssassin on miracle which unfortunately means all incoming mail results in a 2000 line perl script being executed. I get a lot of mail.
It seems I can also just run a daemon which users talk to rather than running their own SpamAssassin scripts.
I spent hours this weekend being logged into ORDB production machines as root. I feel so dirty. What happened to sudo? What happened to accountability? We fixed things, though.
Went for a pizza and a movie. We watched Spiderman. It is an OK movie; the story is all about a girl. Really.
Friday I am going to Århus for the weekend. I will be at the ORDB hackathon for the cause against spam. Show some appreciation. I will return sometime Sunday afternoon.
I bought the Spirited One a new pillow. She likes it.
I have been subject to verbal abuse due to the lack of updates here (hi, honey!). She loves me, really. We actually do lots of stuff like going out to dinner and I have been showing off how well I remember this place. I think she is a little impressed, she just keeps it to herself. I bought her a cute necklace and matching earings the other day. She shined like the sun.
When I am working at the computer, things other than updating my diary are taking my time. If you rely on ORDB.org for spam filtering you might want to see the notice we posted today:
Delays in processing relay tests. ORDB.org is currently seeing delays in processing tests of mail servers suspected to be open relays. Many of you have noticed this over the past few days and mailed us about it, causing our support load to increase dramatically. We are aware of the problem with delayed tests. Please consider carefully before mailing us, as each question we have to answer takes time away from fixing the technical difficulties we are seeing. We thank you for your patience in this matter while we work to restore normal service. Sincerely, The ORDB.org team
I have been working on a FAQ update for the security newsgroup but it is coming along slowly. I also started playing with CSS on mongers.org. Do not yell at me for any mistakes; the site is not done. I got a few things done on the documentation side of mongers today, which was nice.
I need sleep.
