30 September

Uh oh. Woke up at 9.30am. Had a glass of milk. Groaned softly because my shoulders are sore from yesterday's chair relocating experience.

This morning when I did the diary update, I spelled "September" incorrectly. I spotted this myself. Then someone told me that I gotten the days and dates wrong for the past couple of days. So, a slight renumbering has taken place. I have no idea what happened on the 27th. To the best of my knowledge the day never existed.

Played Black & White for a while. I should backup my creature next time I need to reload my playstation. Playing the start of the game over and over becomes a bit trivial after a while.

This made me smile:

<dogs> the taliban have made another annoucement
<dogs> they said in a statement earlier, "We beleive President Bush is
the son of a Nancy Boy"
<dogs> they also raised doubts about his alleged heterosexuality
<dogs> whitehouse officials have responded with hand gestures
<dogs> one official was seen to drop his pants in whats recognised as
the ISO approved stance for "YOUR MOTHER SUCKS BEARS"

It would have been my mother's birthday on the 28th of this month. This is the second time I have forgotten. I wonder what it means. She has been dead for 21 years. I suppose at some stage you just move on.

29 September

Paint me green and call me Susan! I emerged from my bedrom at 7am. On a Saturday. Fucking Saturday! I must be out of my mind! A raving lunatic, I am.

If you notice I am more at ease than I have ever been before it is because I purchased a big-ass leather chair for my office today. It weighs around 20KG and I carried it home on my shoulders. I am not designed for moving large objecs like that. The chair is comfy as fuck, and I could probably have sex in it, too. I will keep you posted.

Spent a bit of time in #openbsd on efnet. When I corrected someone's grammar he responded by saying I must be a Linux user. His rationale: I was focusing on something which was not important. He felt I should be more concerned with writing correct code than writing correct English. *boggle*

28 September

Woke up at 7am. Consumed a Yop. Meant to focus my powers on cf-engine but failed. Regroup, Alex.

The Onion is usually funny. The current edition includes a number of articles with a bite usually only seen on the Dominion and with a point so clear you know you are reading the Onion.

Point-counterpoint: America's Response
On Sept.11, 2001, America was hit by an unprecedented attack on its shores. The devastation and loss of life is incalculable. It is clear to me, as it should be to all Americans, what our nation must do: Retaliate with blind, violent rage, striking back with a fury and vengeance the likes of which modern man has never seen.
Talking To Your Child About The WTC Attacks
You should also let your child know that among those supported by the Taliban is Osama bin Laden, a Saudi multi-millionaire and terrorist who for years has taken refuge in encampments in the rugged hills of Afghanistan. Like his Taliban brethren, bin Laden believes that the U.S. is guilty of apostasy and should be punished accordingly.
US vows to Defeat Whoever It Is We're At War With
Bush is acting with the full support of Congress, which on Sept. 14 authorized him to use any necessary force against the undetermined attackers. According to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL), the congressional move enables the president to declare war, "to the extent that war can realistically be declared on, like, maybe three or four Egyptian guys, an Algerian, and this other guy who kind of looks Lebanese but could be Syrian. Or whoever else it might have been. Because it might not have been them."
God Angrily Clarifies "Don't Kill" rule
"Look, I don't know, maybe I haven't made myself completely clear, so for the record, here it is again," said the Lord, His divine face betraying visible emotion during a press conference near the site of the fallen Twin Towers. "Somehow, people keep coming up with the idea that I want them to kill their neighbor. Well, I don't. And to be honest, I'm really getting sick and tired of it. Get it straight. Not only do I not want anybody to kill anyone, but I specifically commanded you not to, in really simple terms that anybody ought to be able to understand."

I liked this quote by God:

What are you, morons?

Went to bed just after 9pm.

26 September

President Bush plans to propose placing
armed federal marshals on virtually all
U.S. commercial air flights.

I see. I guess I was wrong yesterday. As this is my diary, I can write about anything I want to, so I will write about how funny comp.lang.c is at times:

There's a simpler solution.

Take an ordinary ball-point pen and a small (approx 10mm x 10mm) square
of gummed paper. Write the word "any" on the paper. Then stick it to
your ENTER key.

Problem solved.

25 September

Woke up at 7.10am. It seems 12 hours sleep is required these days.

During a pseudo-discussion of encryption legislation, someone recently said to me that she would have gladly had the government been able to read all her email in exchange for the WTC attacks being stopped in time. That would be nice but terrorists do not work in that fashion.

Make no mistake - legislating the Internet will not make us more secure. A
group with the resolve to murder thousands of innocent people will not be
deterred by Internet restrictions. They will just find another way.
                                -- Brian Martin, attrition.org

It is much easier to ban encryption and take other seemingly strong steps on the Internet than it is to, say, install metal detectors and otherwise enforce various security procedures in every US airport.

24 September

Woohoo! Awake at 4am feeling much better.

VeriSign have the balls to send me spam. MIME encoded. With the wrong content type. And the message contains a lie: The .ws top level domain (TLD) is not short for "website." -- it is the TLD belonging to Samoa, just like .dk belongs to Denmark, .it belongs to Italy, .cc belongs to Cocos and .nu belongs to Niue.

HOW SECURE IS YOUR DOMAIN NAME?

You?ve secured a personalized Web address
(www.samplecompany.com). Did you know the name is
still available to anyone who adds another "dot" name
extension to it (www.samplecompany.ws)?

Protect your online identity with the extension ".WS" (WebSite).
With a .WS address, you not only let the world know you?re a
progressive part of the Internet, but you?re also assured that
no one can capitalize on your stake in the World Wide Web.

Leading technology companies like Yahoo, Intel, Dell, and Cisco
have already secured their valuable domain names with a .ws address.
Do you value yours any less?

Order your .WS domain name extension from VeriSign today for
only $35. Don?t let someone make your Web identity their own.

TLD games make me sick. The spam was sent by e-dialog.com, who also have strangely large testicles as they claim on their website:

"Precision e-mail marketing - it's highly targeted, cost-effective, and
recipients love it.."

Excuse me? E-dialog and VeriSign will feel my wrath when I get some spare time.

I was banned from #bsd-dk because I insist that people think for themselves. I was accused of having an attitude problem. HA.

Went to bed before 7.30pm.

23 September

Over the last while the Spirited One has been quick to take me up on a number of bets, mostly related to music in some fashion. Consequently she has placed herself in debt to me to the tune of 4 ice creams with the 4th one being accumulated today. Payment is long overdue, and I will claim what I am owed even if it makes me sick!

Funny. I got a good nights sleep last night, got up at 5am feeling rested and consumed a full healthy breakfast. By the time afternoon came around I was puking and shitting my bloody guts out. It was great. I went to bed and slept until 4am, only waking up briefly around 9pm.

I have no idea what made me sick. It was not the ice cream as payment is still pending. If I had to take a stab at what caused my illness I would have to guess the suggestion I recieved in email to use frames on my website had something to do with it.

A few days ago in the Danish security newsgroup I called for legislation that held software vendors responsible for the quality of their software, and legislation that held end users and system owners responsible for the consequences of their actions (e.g. running evil code or not patching their systems). If I were living in the US, I would be getting more than I bargined for:

Hackers, virus-writers and web site defacers would face life
imprisonment without the possibility of parole under legislation
proposed by the Bush Administration that would classify most
computer crimes as acts of terrorism.

The Justice Department is urging Congress to quickly approve
its Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), a twenty-five page proposal that
would expand the government's legal powers to conduct electronic
surveillance, access business records, and detain suspected
terrorists.

(Source: SecurityFocus, Hackers face life imprisonment under 'Anti-Terrorism' Act.)

So, next time you launch an evil attachment without thinking, and it uses your machine to attack a range of IIS webservers on the net, you could face time in prison. Be careful.

I fail to see why there is a desire to punish someone who writes viruses, by the way. I do see a reason to punish people who releases them into the wild. I would guess that most researchers working for the anti-virus companies would be "guilty" of writing viruses.

22 September

I cannot find an acceptable layout of my splash screen. Sigh. I would listen to suggestions if I got them. I went to bed around 8 this morning, slept until noon, arsed around some more and then napped again.

It seems I have become part of the crowd of hackers (aka consumer watchdogs) calling themselves the Unamerican Gentlemens Club. I will celebrate with a movie, pizza and some coke and then go to work on your online bank.

Kidding.

I am behind on sharing my movie experiences with you. Allow me to rectify that. I watched "Wonder Boys" recently. It was excellent. If you have an interest in literature or writing you will find it a warm story about people, and it offers you knowledge and understanding that you may take away with you and learn from. It stars Michael Douglas and much overlooked Toby McGuire.

Tonight I watched "15 Minutes" with Robert de Niro and Edward Burns. No, not Edward Norton. Edward Burns. It has an interestingly alternative plot describing how the media can be twisted by simple criminals willing to do whatever it takes for a headline. There is nothing to learn from it but it makes for fine entertainment. Bob and Ed both pull it off nicely.

The Walt Disney company has an interesting habit of releasing movies that makes your skin tingle or makes you laugh. In "Remember the Titans" they allowed director Jerry Bruckheimer to create an epic, based on a true story, which does both -- if you have suffiently dark humour. Denzel Washington plays Coach Boones who is selected to coach a mixed black and white US football team at a time when racism was prominent and the tension was high. Magnificent.

21 September

I mostly just arsed around.

20 September

Entertained Dave for 20 minutes while he abused my Windows skills verbally. He talked about the Windows memory management like I cared.

Wrote more on the FAQ for the danish security newsgroup. 6 1/2 out of 8 is not bad. Please note that I have ceased my 'consultancy service' activities.

My supercomputer suffered a kernel panic. I did not determine a cause. Prior to installing the new 10 gigabyte drive the uptime was 130 days. You can well imagine what this leads me to believe. If it happens again I will hook up a serial console for debugging.

19 September

Went through a little spelling tutorial, which was nice.

Using my ancient skills in the area of harddrive fitting, I managed to trick the 1994 BIOS of my "supercomputer" to boot with an extra 10 gigabyte drive. It is now hosting the full OpenBSD CVS repository, served via viewcvs, plus various important files from my playstation backed up to a Samba share -- all in 8MB of RAM!

18 September

I was stuck in the past, it seems. I thought today was the 17th. My apologies.

Nimba, anyone? This worm exploits a handful of IIS vulnerabilities and an IE vulnerability. People are not patching their shit. Come on! How hard is it to run Windows Update?

Removed the graphics, and turned it into clever CSS.

16 September

The defense attorney was not available to take my call. I have arranged to call again tomorrow at 9:00 CEST/8am IST where he should be available.

You will notice I have made an exception to my no graphics rule and included the logo of the Anti-DMCA project on the splash screen of the Dominion. You are strongly urged to understand what it is, so you will know to fight it and anything similar suggested for laws in your country. You cannot imagine how insanely important it is.

The image will be turned into clever CSS later this week. Right now the extra attention is required.

I do not use the words "highly recommended" lightly. The sites to which I link from my list are absolute gold mines in each their field. Some of you will know how much I hate portal sites, so why else would I link to these places if I did not have a spectacular reason to want you to know of each one?

15 September

A friend lost his newly acquired programming job due to cutbacks. If you are looking for a skilled C programmer in greater Copenhagen (or remote worker), let me know.

Two additional muppets managed to get their name on my list. One asked a silly question on the info-cvs list. The other is media-whore Jerry Falwell, an American reverend, who made a comment for which he should be raped and shot.

I was in a fight with my duvet. I hate it when it decides to roll up at one end of the duvet cover. So I grabbed it and shook it madly until it unrolled itself. I just had to show who is boss around here.

Today I learned that a 21 year old in Denmark has been convicted of attempted computer intrusions on what appears to be a very weak basis. He port-scanned a machine which, combined with being in possession of a "how-to" on hacking and some other security related tools, resulted in a conviction. I will be speaking to his defense attorney tomorrow in the hopes to determine if he was really convicted on such weak evidence.

My interest in the above-mentioned case brought me into contact with another individual in Denmark who were brought up on charges of "hacking" about a year and a half ago. When he was showed the evidence against him, it was clear that he had simply used his FTP client with a mistyped address. The address he accidently entered had a ZoneAlarm personal firewall at the end of it, and he was reported to the police. His machines were taken away for 8 months before charges were dropped. How would you like to have your home raided because you hit the wrong key on your keyboard?

I am starting to wonder if these newbie PC users who are afraid of the keyboard know something I do not.

US congress took to discussing a global ban on the use of non-backdoored encryption as a result of Tuesdays attack on the USA. This means that unless the authorities are able to break the encryption product you have chosen to protect your information, you will not be allowed to use it any longer.

If this is put into effect, the consequences are going to be much more serious than 4 hijacked planes being used as bombs. Any such ban won't stop evil people from using encryption. It simply means that individuals and corporations will not longer be able to protect valuable information: if the authorities have a way of accessing encrypted data, it will only be a matter of time before someone else determines how this is done.

Hijacking planes and killing thousands of people is illegal, but someone went ahead and did it anyway.

To my knowledge, the investigations of these attacks have not been stopped or slowed by encountering encrypted material. The mobile phone system in the US is not encrypted and that is reportedly what was used by the attackers to co-ordinate their efforts. I fully understand why someone would want to use the hype of such a tragedy for their own agenda.

Please take the time to educate anyone who thinks encryption should be banned. It is very important.

This is nice to see.

This report from Atstake news is kind of funny:

A few weeks ago, CryptoLogic Inc., a Canadian company that creates online
games, was victim to an attack. Someone managed to access the site's server
and modify the game code to increase the payouts. The company lost $1.9 million
in the course of a few hours, as players discovered that they couldn't lose.

I consumed approximately half a cow for dinner which is probably going to be the highlight of todays entry. I am not motivated to write anything remotely funny or interesting. If your web browser knows how, most of the text on my homepage should now be justified.

Not too many of you will care about this but I will waste the space ayway. See where it says Celeron? That is bad. See where it says 6 hour battery life span? That is good. See where it says Neomagic? That is bad too. I want a Thinkpad!

Did that make you horny? Personally, I am ready to flip my desk over with a slight motion of the hip.

12 September

Turned again. There is something special about being out of bed before 8am. Someone in the Tori Amos newsgroup I am reading made the comment that she had not seen a commercial on TV in 12 hours.

When Dave originally pasted a link to sky.com's article about this, I thought someone had compromised the news service and put a tasteless hoax of a story up. That would have been nice.

It is early. I still have not decided what to have for breakfast.

I have a collection of about 70 pictures involving the attack, including a picture of an older male laying dead on the ground. His entire left leg and a portion of his chest is completely flat where an emergency vehicle ran him over. The flesh and bones from his leg popped out the side and are visible on the ground next to him. Most of his organs had been forced out through his anus by the pressure applied to his body.

Various individuals in the information security and greater IT industry raised the following absolutely pointless questions:

If an evil person can be trained to navigate a plane and calculate the weakest structual point of a building then he or she can surely learn to penetrate computer systems and disrupt telecoms, oil and electricity feeds. I have no idea what effort is required to do this in most countries, but it may be less than it takes to hijack and crash 4 commercial aircraft.

I also read a number of other articles, some claiming that the Internet broke down yesterday (Funny, I did not notice) and others claiming that the Internet handled the event so well that it has been dubbed the news medium of the future. I am not so sure! A number of my friends feel very strongly that this Internet thing is dead in the water. Sources estimate that perhaps 100 people worldwide use the Internet on a daily basis. Ha.

Yesterdays silly/sarcastic/whatever reference to the Spar manager did not go down well with all readers of the Dominion. Having grown tired of explaining myself, my weary eyes simply stray to the horizon.

As for breakfast, I did not have any. I skipped directly to lunch.

11 September

It is impossible to protect against what happened today. However, I fear that politicians will be speaking of providing a "blanket of security" for the American people, and making it their "number 1 priority." In reality, if a person or a group of people is willing to die for a cause such as this, it cannot be prevented, and I hope that someone with a platform bigger than mine will have to balls to make this clear should anyone forget it in the aftermath.

Nostradamus would have been an ace to have on a security team. He would have been able to phrase a security policy so vague that it could be applied anywhere. I know many are trying to pin one of his predictions to todays events. Rather than quoting him or Sun Tzu, I will quote Pink Floyd:

To martyr yourself to caution
Is not going to help at all
Because there'll be no safety in numbers
...

As much as the horror is unspeakable for those who fell victim, it is worth remembering that with 8 planes, slightly better timing and lethal payload, much more damage could have been done. The number of casualties did not go into the millions. I could go on about how this event is probably going to result in silly actions being taken, but I am starting to get sick of thinking I know everything. You may be getting sick too. I will venture that whatever name they are going to come up with (A Night To Remember, When The World Shook, et al), I am going to puke my guts out because of it.

In other news: OpenBSD switched to 3.0-beta today. Sendmail 8.12.0 was imported today, and it no longer allows the mail daemon to run without binding to a network interface. The sendmail people are braindamaged. I expect to do a cvsup tomorrow so that functions I need will work reliably in the release.

I am considering an affair with the lovely manager of the local Spar in exchange for her stocking Dr. Pepper in the store. What do you think?

10 September

An old lady sat down next to me on the bus earlier today. I did not notice until we got all the way into town, but she had suffered a heartattack and died only a few minutes after she sat down next to me. She was being tossed all over the place as the bus turned the narrow corners in the city centre. I thought she was just napping.

I know I can have a calming effect on people at times, but that is just ridiculous.

Vertical Horizon have this particular song they play, and I am no longer sure it is healthy for me to be listening to it. The song is called "You're a God."

Tori's "God" snaps me out of it though.

God, sometimes you just don't come through
God, sometimes you just don't come through
Do you need a woman to look after you?
God, sometimes you just don't come through

You make pretty daisies, pretty daisies
I gotta find what you're doing about things here
A few witches burning, gets a little toasty
I gotta find why you always go when the wind blows

Tell me you're crazy maybe then I'll understand
You got your 9 iron in the back seat just in case
You've gone south, you love your new 4 wheel
I gotta find why you always go when the wind blows

Will you even tell her if you decide to make the sky fall?
Will you even tell her if you decide to make the sky fall?

God, sometimes you just don't come through

This is my excess.

There were snails in my sitting room. Real crawly, crawly slimey ones. I put them back outside. I suspect they got in through the wall, underneath the stepping board to one of the balconies. There is a gap between the board and the wall below.

A post was made to the incidents list, which discussed large scale sshd scanning detected in the wild. There may be a zero-day sshd exploit in circulation. Watch your logs.

I also learned that the release of FreeBSD 5.0 has been postponed by a year, the new target date being November 2002. As much as I normally prefer OpenBSD over FreeBSD the world will benefit from the strong new feature set planned for 5.0, and hopefully it will push other vendors to follow suit.

8 September

I was fully awake and out of bed just after 10am. Quite remarkable, really. For most of the day I managed to do nothing worth remembering, except for a few moments brought on by the Spirited One. How does she do it?

Spoke on the phone to a friend in Denmark, who, when I mentioned of my continued problems with my playstation, retorted that the motherboard in my system had known issues with my audiocard. I may need to slap the staff of IT-Direct around a little.

7 September

Package arrived from Amazon. "Intrusion Signatures and Analysis" by Stephen Northcutt et al., and "To Bring You My Love" by PJ Harvey. Nice.

A local root security vulnerability was found in OpenBSD in the UUCP utilities. The UUCP utilities are setuid 'uucp' so root was not instantly obtained. These UUCP utilities are run nightly by root, however, so modifying the tool enabled the intruder to run whatever code he wanted.

A portion of bitterness was noted in yesterdays entry by the Spirited One. She felt it was completely unreasonable that I expected her to purchase an $18 million attack helicopter for my birthday. All her complaints were quickly overruled.

6 September

This morning Dave went to look at a new place which happens to be close to where I currently live. He popped around afterwards as he had never seen my flat before.

The evening was equally exciting with a Police helicopter hovering around Westend for almost an hour. I have no idea what they were looking for. If the Spirited One had felt like shelling out $18 million on an Apache helicopter as a birthday present I would know what was going on. But no.

Still waiting for my order from Amazon.co.uk to arrive. Not pleased!

Mooooooo.

goal is to make this life changing program affordable so average folks can
benefit from the power of it.

Since I know how much you want to help others, you're going to receive your
Minister Certification for under $100.00... Not even $50.00... You are going
to receive the entire life-changing course for only $29.95.

At least I now know where "He moves in mysterious ways" comes from.

Ate a pizza and watched a video to take my mind off various things.

They call it stormy Monday,
but Tuesday's just as bad..

3 September

Today is my birthday so I fully intend on spoiling myself senseless, starting with a big filthy breakfast, lots of Dr. Pepper and chocolate throughout the day and finally going out to dinner in the evening.

I have not yet decided what I am going to get myself, but I will probably pick something from my list of needful things which strangely enough has been updated with new wishitems and removed things I bought already. *hint* *hint*.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurp. That hit the spot. What are you looking at? It is my birthday. I can burp with passion if I want to. Piss off.

Ireland is a fucking joke at times.

I am so elite. I have obtained a partial copy (in 256kbit MP3s) of Tori Amos' concert in London two days ago.
