I am not the hacker who goes by the alias Fluffi Bunni. I am Honey Bunny. Easy mistake to make.
A muppet from Gigasoft Denmark once again spammed the Danish security newsgroup with a software ad cleverly disguised as a request for a (free) security evaluation. This was more than I could handle so I started ripping the product apart and posted my initial findings to the group.
I get no respect:
<ego> Good night old man :)
I stumbled upon a few different private blogs (what a lame name for an online diary or journal) lately. I wonder if my rants appear as clueless and pointless as the ones I read.
If todays entry is lame I have a reason: earlier I slipped in the kitchen and banged the back of my head against the concrete floor. Yes, it fucking hurt, you dweeb. I am keeping my phone close in case I start feeling odd. The slippers (with that name I should have guessed!) I was wearing at the time have been obliterated during a brief fit of rage that followed my accident.
I guess my diary is not what it used to be. Given the choice between reading my diary tonight and having an orgasm before going to bed, the Spirited One chose the orgasm.
If you are bored, go to the Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie section on MP3.com. I recommend listening to "Every OS sucks" and "Welcome to the Internet Help Desk."
Only a few days left to make my diary 2002 compliant.
I wish this was my desk.
Ugh. My head. I was not supposed to be drinking yesterday but I was held at gunpoint. Honest, officer! That is exactly what happened. There was 17 of them. I had no choice! They would have killed me and smoked me a kipper for breakfast. What do you want from me?
How about the truth, you degenerate alcoholic?
Oi! Be quiet you. Show some respect.
Uhm. I dread tonight.
Wuss.
Shut up, you. I swear I will smack you.
Christ. I was only messing with ya. Pardon me for being born by the way.
Dave has invited me for a few drinks in the West tonight. Some of his friends are going to be there. I do not expect anything wild. Must save my energy for tomorrow evening.
So, Alex. What's the deal with your diary, man?
Oh yeah. My diary. Well..
I mean, did you abandon it completely? If so, why didn't you tell us?
No, no. Nothing like that. I just have not had much to say the past couple of days. Even I can only take so much of "got up at foo, did something, went to bed late" so I just left it for the past few days.
Oh, I see. That's cool I guess. Hang on, you don't usually write English using contracted words. You usually write "you are" instead of "you're". How do we know it's really you?
I am not doing anything differently. You are the one who is talking sloppy. I just write what you are saying.
What the hell are you talking about, you twat? I'm not real. You just made up this fake person to ask you questions because you couldn't be arsed coming up with a way of phrasing your message as fluent text. You bastard.
Well, if that is how you feel..
So, anyway. What have you been doing??
Just arsing around. Look, would you mind not interrupting me when I am talking? It is quite rude.
Yeah ok. Sorry.
So anyway. I am just going to be quiet for a few days until I have something more to say. I am not sick, I am not dead, I am not depressed. Just taking some time off. Ok?
Ok. Later, man.
My slow-ass connection is still downloading this morning.
Went to christmas dinner in the evening. Met up in Porterhouse, then went to Kingsland and finished at O'Briens. Went to bed just after 3am. Dave and Jerry called me "old."
Woke up at 8.45am. My knee is still sore.
Installed iMesh on my playstation, selected a load of songs (and stuff) for download and let it run over night.
I have returned to reality after a much needed break. My left knee is really sore.
I will be away until Sunday evening.
Miracle is down. Today I downgraded to 3.0-release which panic'ed the kernel in the space of 5 minutes. I suspect hardware problems with the SCSI controller, or there is something really wrong with the driver. Dave has started to use miracle for IRC and complained that I was impacting his idletime SLAs. I smiled a little.
We had a sitdown with Declan and he gave us the official word on the new roles. I am stepping back and Dave is switching his mind into freak^H^H^H^H^Hteam leader mode. The exact details of our new roles will be agreed on paper in January.
Whatever.
Woke up at 5.45am, which was special. Is this what you call a regular sleeping pattern?
Spent some more time looking at Subversion code. I will submit a few patches and aim for becoming a committer on Subversion. OpenBSD will have to wait.
Got up before 7am and arsed around while waiting for Dave to call. Funny enough, he was also up and waiting for me to call. So we were both in wait states past noon.
I was learning Subversion and talking to some of the developers while I waited.
Got some design and coding done on CCMS, which was nice. I went to bed at 8pm. I am a tired old man.
My neck is sore, I have had a headache since this morning and my body feels out of alignment. Almost like a hangover, except I did not drink last night.
I recieved nice mail from the Garda:
Detective Chief Superintendent Felix J. McKenna
and
Detective Chief Superintendent Austin McNally
cordially invite
Mr. Alex Holst
to Seasonal Drinks at the Garda Social Club,
Harriton Street, Dublin 8.
Getting pissed with law enforcement. Is that not special?
I napped for a little and then went to dinner with Mick at 7pm. I ate almost nothing and was not very good company. I had to excuse myself and cut the evening short. I was home before 9pm and went to bed.
Woke up at 7am because I had way too much alcohol last night. My head was killing me most of the day, even after I took painkillers. The Spirited One specifically stated she was not feeling pity for me. A lesson may be in order. I wonder if she will be such a smartarse if I do not give her sex for a few days! I think not.
Miracle stopped spawning new processes. I have seen this problem with OpenBSD on Dell hardware before. I am not sure if the problem is related to Dell hardware, but I have only seen it happen on Dell systems. I will not hand out accounts until the problem has been resolved. Gorm and Dave are in line for accounts. Anyone else? Before you even think about requesting access, read http://a.area51.dk/mongers.org/site/introduction#account carefully.
Woke up around 11am and started working on configuration of miracle. All the system configuration files are going to be revision controlled, first by CVS and later Subversion.
In the afternoon I headed into town to meet up with Tony et al for beer and food. The session was in Darker Kelly's. I had an absolutely horrible chicken kiev for dinner. I had not really wanted to go out but it turned out to be a good laugh. I was home around 1am.
Woke up at 4am. Yay.
Tomorrow afternoon I will be meeting with the director and a handful of officers from BSI Security. I should be safe for a few hours. Until they get drunk, that is.
Dave called me "sugar" or he was making a reference to the alien in Men in Black. Not sure which.
It turned out later he meant none of those things. Home around 7, and in need of a nap. My PowerEdge is online and running on battery powered DNS. This should be fixed over the weekend, along with some other issues. It's a miracle.
Considering I stayed up all the previous night, I handled today well. Went to a 4 hour meeting, which drained me of a lot of energy. I left the office quite late and when I got home I slept before 9 pm.
In addition to my mind relief trip in January I will be going away next weekend (going out 14th, returning on the 16th).
With the issues at $EMPLOYER over the last while, I stopped caring about a lot
of things. I need to start caring again on a few areas, and otherwise just
provide risk mitigation.
Currently playing: "Vincent" by Don McLean.
Everything annoys me these days. I need to attend some anger management classes. Even this pissed me off:
<rassilon> I'm patiently waiting for XP Server to come out. <rassilon> XP Server doesn't do theming though. <holsta> Why would you need theme support in a server? <rassilon> You don't, but the feature's still kind of cool.
I recieved my OpenBSD CD sets and with the problems I have been having with my playstation lately, I decided to blast XP and give OpenBSD a whirl on a beast of a machine. This led me to discover a number of nasty things.
First, my DVD drive has problems reading certain files on the OpenBSD CDs. When I run sha1 against files on the CD, they come up with different sums than when I run sha1 while the CD is in my laptop. Files are getting corrupted as they are read from CDs. This is not supposed to happen. It can certainly explain the random application failures I have seen with the system. I am not sure if the problem is with the DVD drive or the controller.
Second, I agreed with the sales freak to put a 7200 rpm harddrive in the system. The one I have in is 3600 rpm. Half the drive speed. What is the point in having a brand new CPU and lots of RAM if the harddrive installed is 4 years old?
So, in conclusion, my "new" machine is a piece of shit. Very upsetting.
Went into the office for a meeting. Another day of frustration.
The "highlight" of my day was almost punching Dave in the face due to his habit of calling people "asshole" or "loser" instead of their name. He reminds me of my younger brother in that aspect. I have mentioned it to him several times a while ago, both as serious matters and threatning to break his face if he does not stop. I am tired of repeating myself.
Left work just after 4 to get a cab home. I fell asleep a number of times on the way, but I woke up from snoring. The cab driver must have thought I was a freak.
I slept from 5 pm until past midnight when Dave called me to clarify some details about a meeting.
Currently playing: Francis Black. Mick, what the hell is track 7 called?
I woke up at 5.30 in the afternoon. Great.
It has been weeks since I last signed on to the UGC machine. I logged on tonight to have a look. It took me a while to remember the hostname and as I reviewed past conversation I wondered why I bothered to begin with. So now I do not.
Woke up at 3pm with a brand new sore throat and a head filled with snot. Consumed more soup. Later went over to Dave's for food.
I was supposed to have worked on some things this weekend, but I did not because of the poor state my body was in.
Oorh, OpenSSH 3.0.2 has been released due to a security problem. I recommend you get it.
My health is really taking a turn for the worse. I woke up around 1pm when the Spirited One made my phone make noises. I wore 7 layers of clothes for the entire day, consumed 3 gallons of hot soup and tea which really helped my throat and head. By the time I went to bed I was feeling good.
Dispite her habits of "accidentally" kicking me in the groin, pushing me off the bed, elbowing me at night and more, I am seeing the Spirited One again. Smile. We are.
